I am a lecturer in Civil Engineering at the National University of Ireland, Galway. My research areas are in the fields of structures, earthquake engineering, computational mechanics, sustainable construction technologies, sustainable energy and life cycle assessment. Prior to joining NUI Galway, I work as a consultant on national and international projects. Since joining, NUI Galway I have been involved in course and curriculum development at NUI Galway and on national projects. For example, I am the programme director for the BSc Programme in Project & Construction Management at NUI Galway. Over the last 3 years, I have introduced service learning into a number of modules in the discipline of Civil Engineering. I have also established an joint initiative with NUI Galway, Alan Kerins Projects and Foundation Nepal called ‘Engineering for Humanity’, which gives our undergraduate engineering and construction management students the opportunity to work in developing countries as part of their undergraduate degree programme.
